The Nixon City Council formally approved the March 1 resignation of Council Member Melissa Pompa at the regular council meeting Monday, March 18 at City Hall.

Pompa resigned from council because she was hired to be the new City of Nixon financial director, beginning her duties on Monday, March 11. Mayor Dorothy Riojas accepted her resignation when it was proffered, but the council had to take formal action on it to approve it for the record.

The council also set an application deadline of Tuesday, March 26, for candidates interested in serving out the remainder of Pompa’s term on the council, which ends in May 2025.

Because Nixon is a Type A general law city, state law allows the council to fill a single vacancy by appointment of the majority of remaining members until the next regular city election, at which time the office will go on the ballot for any unexpired term remaining. The filing period has already passed for the next city election on May 4, so the next regular city election will be May 3, 2025.

Candidates must have resided at least one year in Texas (and six months in the city limits) prior to the filing deadline. They must be 18 years old, a registered voter in the city and not have been determined to be mentally incapacitated or finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned.

Pompa, who was previously employed with Third Coast Bank as a Treasury Management Public Funds product specialist, has been a board member for the Nixon-Smiley Little League and has served on the Nixon Housing Authority and Nixon-Smiley Head Start Parent Council.

She also was added Monday to the city’s financial accounts at Third Coast Bank as an authorized signatory.

In other action, council members voted to surplus a Bulldog RTV belonging to the Utility Department and purchase a new RTV/ATV from Scherrer Kubota on a buy board government rate.

Council members heard a report about work being done around town by the city to improve the Little League fields, including new awnings on the dugouts, as well as concrete being poured next to the splash pad at the park.
