R. Gerard Nuñez, 57, of Gonzales, affectionately known as “Sir” or “Coach” to the many whose lives he touched, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Kissimmee, Florida.
Gerard was born August 24, 1969, in Austin to Raul Ochoa Nuñez and Mary Estrada Nuñez. He graduated from Crockett High School, where he enjoyed playing football, baseball, and running track. He continued his education in college in Austin, carrying with him the drive and determination that would become hallmarks of his life.
Gerard was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Gonzales and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5090. He also dedicated countless hours to his community, actively serving on the Board of Directors for the Gonzales Little League Association and coaching youth sports for more than 18 years. To the young athletes he coached, he was more than a coach; he was a mentor, encourager, and steady presence who helped shape lives both on and off the field.
On May 2, 1998, Gerard married the love of his life, Irma Linda Hernandez, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin. Together, they moved to Gonzales in December 2000 and built a life centered on family, faith, hard work, and service to others.
Gerard was never without a cup of coffee in his hand or a warm cup nearby. He treasured life and a good cup of coffee always made things better.
Gerard and Irma shared a partnership in the local Sonic Drive-In, where Gerard devoted himself to providing excellent food and service while creating a joyful place to work. For 26 years, he poured his time, energy, and heart into the business and the people who made it special. Naturally an early riser, Gerard was always the first to open the doors and get the day started. His magnificent work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to cleanliness set a high standard for everyone around him. Yet it was his humor, patience, and people skills that made the workday enjoyable and earned him the admiration and affection of employees and customers alike. His leadership and dedication left a lasting mark on the business and the community it served.
The title “Sir” was bestowed upon Gerard as an expression of respect and nobility, a fitting reflection of the way he carried himself and treated others. Whether at work, on the ball field, or among family and friends, Gerard was patient, loving, and kind to all he met and worked beside.
Away from work, Gerard enjoyed playing golf with family and friends, and a good game of poker was always a welcome opportunity for fun and fellowship. He delighted in watching Texas Longhorn football and baseball, especially when his sons were by his side. He also had a passion for fantasy football and would undoubtedly be delighted to know that his sons have taken over his team, keeping a favorite part of his life alive in the next generation.
But Gerard’s greatest legacy was never measured by his accomplishments at work or the many ways he served his community. It was found in the faith he lived, the love he gave, and the example he set for his children. He worked tirelessly to instill in his sons not only a strong work ethic, respect for others, and a sense of community, but also an unwavering faith in God and an enduring love for family.
Gerard and Irma modeled a loving and caring marriage for their boys, one grounded in gratitude, patience, forgiveness, and trust. Their home and family were a testament to the values they cherished and the life they built together. Gerard was truly a blessing from heaven to his family and to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence brought joy, his example inspired others, and his love will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
Gerard is survived by his adoring family, including his beloved wife, Irma Linda Nuñez; his sons, Gerard Alexander Nuñez (Vanessa Daniel), Andrew Nuñez, and Luke Ryan Nuñez; his mother, Mary L.
