Three straight home wins in district play have the Gonzales Apaches FC sitting pretty when it comes to making the playoffs in soccer.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Apaches scored two goals in the first half and three in the second to put away the Cole Cougars, 5-2, at Apache Field. The win kept Gonzales in second place in District 27-4A and knocked Cole back to third place.
Then, on Friday, Feb. 14, Gonzales had a sweetheart of a time on Valentine’s Day by blasting Young Men’s Leadership Academy, 8-0, at Apache Field. Gonzales scored five goals in the first half and added three more in the second in a contest than never was a contest. YMLA is winless in district play and has scored only twice all season.
Finally, on Monday, Feb. 17, the Apaches played host to the JFK Rockets and sent three guided missiles of their own into the JFK goal to win, 3-0. Gonzales has only allowed two goals in their past six halves of play and only 10 goals altogether in eight district contests and 25 overall. Meanwhile, the Apaches have scored 31 times in district play and 50 goals altogether.
Gonzales is now 7-4-4 overall, but even more importantly, 5-1-2 in district play and nipping at the heels of first-place La Vernia, which is 6-1 in district and 9-4-2 overall. The Apaches will host Luling at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, and then travel to La Vernia for the big showdown for first place at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25.
