The new school year is just a few weeks away for many around the state of Texas and the Gonzales YMCA will be celebrating with a bash.

The Back to School Bash returns to Independence Square this Saturday, Aug. 3 with many activities both students and parents can enjoy.

One of the event organizers, Adriane Hastings, said there will be water slides, bounce houses, dunking booths, and they will also have the Gonzales Police Department and Gonzales Sheriffs Office will talk to the students about safety, she said.

Hastings added they will be taking donations for school supplies for the Stuff the Bus campaign for students in need of school supplies.

This is the time of the year when Hastings’ team gets phone calls from organizations asking if the event will be help those in need of financial help or if they need school supplies.

“I see a lot of grandparents that that are basically on fixed incomes that are raising their grandchildren. They don't have that extra funding to purchase all of these school supplies, and their school clothes, their shoes. And the way the economy is now, even more so, they just can't afford it,” Hastings said.

Hastings said it takes teamwork to get an event like this going and the goal of the event is for the children.

“It's all about our children, and they're our future, you know, and to take care of them and to let them know that they're loved. They're supported, you know, and that's all that matters and that is why we do it,” Hastings said.

The school supplies will not only help students but all teachers as well.

“We're here to help the teachers with Expo markers and construction paper, but also all the different types of school supplies, from scissors to crayons, spiral notebooks, composition, folders, and markers,” Hastings said.

The remaining school supplies will be sent to the Gonzales ISD Central Office.

The event is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Independence Square.
