Main Street approves interlocal agreement with GISD for Junior Main Street Board

The Gonzales Main Street Board met for its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, July 18 at the Gonzales Main Street office.

One of the big agenda items was an interlocal agreement with Gonzales Independent School District for the creation of a Junior Main Street Board.

This item was discussed at the last Main Street meeting.

“At our last meeting, the board approved the bylaws for the creation of the additional boards in order to form the Junior Main Street board. But upon further exploration with the city attorney, it was discovered that this can be accomplished through an interlocal agreement with Gonzales Independent School District, so we don't have to change our bylaws,” Main Street Director Tiffany Hutchinson-Padilla said.

Padilla added that with the interlocal agreement it puts “responsibility and accountability back onto the school.”

“We are just, in a sense, helping with a club that will be developed by the school, so all manners of insurance and things like that is on the school, not on the city,” Hutchinson-Padilla said.

The main focus is to have students engage in small businesses within the Main Street district.

“We'd like to pair them with some of our Main Street businesses so that they can get some hands-on experience with some of our entrepreneurial people, that they can also help support them with marketing,” Hutchinson-Padilla said.

The board approved the interlocal agreement unanimously.

The next Main Street board meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 20.
