Body found in motel

Gonzales County EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Gonzales police converged on a Gonzales motel just after noon Thursday when the motel’s management reported a possible dead body in one of its rooms.

About 12:30 p.m. Thursday, police scanner reports indicated a possible DOA (dead on arrival) at the Best Western Regency Inn & Suites, across the street from Walmart in the 1800 block of Sarah DeWitt Drive.

“Check out time is 11 a.m., and the guest didn’t respond when we knocked on the door,” said Meena Patel, co-manager of the motel. “We knew something was wrong, so we called the police.”

Justice of the Peace Deidra Voigt arrived at the scene around 1:15 p.m., and remained in the room with Gonzales police for almost an hour before funeral home personnel removed the deceased’s body.

Voigt pronounced the room’s occupant dead on arrival, but would not confirm the person’s identity or cause of death pending notification of next of kin.

A Lexus LS400 parked immediately in front of Room 107 where the body was found drew attention — individually as well as collectively — from Gonzales police, Voigt and funeral home personnel prior to the body being removed from the scene.

No official police report was available at press time.
