Early voting begins Monday in May 6 election

Early voting begins Monday, April 24, for the May 6 municipal, school board and bond elections as every city and school district within Gonzales County will have at least one race or measure on the ballot for voters to decide.

Voters can cast early ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24-28 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1-2 at the following locations:
• City of Gonzales and Gonzales ISD: Randle Rather Building, 427 St. George St., Gonzales.

• City of Nixon, City of Smiley, Nixon-Smiley CISD: Nixon Public Library, 401 N Nixon Ave.

• City of Waelder and Waelder ISD: Waelder City Hall, 300 US Hwy 90 W.

Election day voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the following locations:

• City of Gonzales and Gonzales ISD: Randle Rather Building, 427 St. George St., Gonzales.

• City of Nixon and Nixon-Smiley CISD: Nixon Public Library, 401 N Nixon Ave.

• City of Smiley and Nixon-Smiley CISD: Smiley Volunteer Fire Department, 208 N FM 108.

• Nixon-Smiley CISD: Leesville Cemetery Association, 6077 CR 155, Leesville.

• City of Waelder and Waelder ISD: Waelder Community Center, 311 US Hwy 90 W.

Gonzales City Council

Lorenzo Hernandez and Douglas Durham are squaring off for the District 3 seat currently held by Bobby O’Neal, who did not seek re-election. In District 4, Ronda Miller ran unopposed and has been declared elected.

Gonzales ISD

In District 3, incumbent Glenn Menking faces a challenge from D’Anna Robinson. In District 6, Ashley Molina squares off against Krystal Navejar for the seat, which is currently held by Dr. Kim Strozier, who was appointed to the position temporarily following the resignation of District 6 trustee Sue Gottwald.

In District 5, incumbent Ross Hendershot III is unopposed and has been declared elected.

Nixon City Council

Ten candidates are seeking three available at-large spots on the Nixon City Council. They are, in ballot order, Justin B. La Fleur (incumbent), Angel De La Cruz, Patsy Vigil Scherrer, Shannon Smith, Michael Martinez, Adolph Trigo, Rene Amaya (incumbent), J.J. Garza, Bryan Williams and Melissa Pompa.

Smiley City Council

There are seven people seeking three at-large council seats on the Smiley City Council. Candidates in ballot order are Richard Morgan Forester Jr. (Rick), Diane P. Moreno, Elisa Douglas, Dionicio G. Benavidez (Daniel), Michaela Mills, Lori Price and Michael K. Mills. Moreno, Douglas and Price are incumbents.

Nixon-Smiley CISD

While Chris Villasana (incumbent) is running unopposed in Place 4, there is a race in Place 6 between challenger Loyce Adcock-Rice and incumbent Aly Tschoepe.

Nixon-Smiley is also considering five bond measures totaling a combined $37,928,850. For more about these bond measures, see the separate story on the bond issue in this edition of The Inquirer.

Waelder City Council

Six people are running for three at-large seats on the Waelder City Council. In ballot order, they are Robert “Kido” Tovar, Marie Ibarra Almaraz, Curtis Hadnot (incumbent), Mike Harris (incumbent), Rachel Vargas Martin and Martha Melchor.

Waelder ISD

The school district is trying a third time to pass a bond issue for the school, this time for $10.3 million in a scaled-down version. Proposition A is for $7.1 million for construction, while Proposition B is for $3.2 million in refunding bonds.
