Gertrude “Gertie” L. Ehrig Iley

Gertrude “Gertie” L. Ehrig Iley, 98, a resident at The Heights of Gonzales, in Gonzales, Texas departed this life on Monday, September 23, 2024 and entered her heavenly eternal home. She was born May 1, 1926, in Gonzales County, Texas to Otto Ernest Ehrig and Lena (Baenziger) Ehrig.

After graduating from Gonzales High School, she attended Texas Lutheran University for a short period. On September 12, 1944, she married her hometown sweetheart, Thomas “Tom” Wesley Iley Jr. and was married for 57 years until his death in 2001.

Gertie and Tom relocated to the Clegg area of Live Oak County in 1946. She was first and foremost a wife, mother and homemaker. In later years, she kept the books for the family trucking business. She then worked at the Live Oak Auction barn and Linney Drug Store. She spent her last 22 working years at Cobb’s Pharmacy in which she retired at the age of 88. Gertie lived 68 years of her life in George West. The last 10 years of her life, she was back in her hometown of Gonzales.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gonzales, but most of her membership years were spent at the First Baptist Church in George West. Her strong love and faith in our Lord was exhibited in her daily life. She will be remembered for her caring and thoughtful ways.

Gertie is survived by her son, Dennis Iley and wife, Gail of Manhattan, Montana; daughter, Sharon Smith and husband, David of Harwood, Texas; nine grandchildren, Kevin and Terri Iley; Megan Drennon and husband, Tim; Marib, Hannah and Thomas Wesley Iley IV and wife, Teddi; Sarah Moench and husband, Eric, Heath Snider and wife, Alyssa, and Lance Snider and wife, Kait; and great grandchildren, Kennedy, Lleyton, Autumn and Reid.

Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Cricket Iley, her seven brothers; Waldemar, Alvin, Oscar, Bert, Helmuth, Raymond and Hugo; and a son-in-law, George Snider.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 2 PM, at the First Baptist Church in George West, Texas.
