John (Sonny) Robert Wells

John (Sonny) Robert Wells, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at the age of 81 years old. He was surrounded by his wife and loving family members. He struggled with complications from Diabetes and Lung Cancer, and he is now free from his pain and suffering.

Sonny is survived by his wife Earlene whom he met in Houston on a blind date. The evening they met they danced the night away together with joy and love 43 years ago until his final breath. Love was always in the air when they were together. They had just celebrated their 40^th wedding anniversary on the 21^st of July.

Sonny was a hard worker and kind hearted man throughout his life. His motto was “there is no such thing as can’t”. He was always there to help his family, friends and community whenever possible. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (Poppy) and uncle. His life was enriched by his hobbies, which included hunting, playing poker and golf both as a player and a spectator. He enjoyed following college basketball, golf, and football.

Sonny was born on December 5, 1942 in Houston, Texas. He attended high school in Splendor, Texas, where he played basketball, football and held an undefeated track record for many years. He served on active duty in the United States Navy and received a honorable discharge for his commitment and duty. His service to our country was a testament of love for his country. This set a strong foundation of discipline that he carried throughout his life and taught to others.

After Sonny’s  military service his life included working in a General Motors factory in New York driving an ice cream truck, he was a taxi cab driver in New York City and a big rig truck operator, before moving back to Texas where he would enter the oil field. He owned several businesses in Gonzales. One of them was “Sonny’s Oilfield Supply” which he operated for many years prior to retirement. He was always proud to give back to the community, and he enjoyed supporting the FFA and 4H auctions for the kids. He was a lifelong member of the Gonzales VFW.

Sonny and Earlene spent many years together traveling in their RV across America. Sonny never met a stranger and they made lifelong friends with so many people. In Earlene’s words “it was an experience of a lifetime. There is so much to appreciate in the U.S.A. and words cannot describe the beauty of our national parks. It was an awesome adventure. I am happy that we were able to experience that together.”

Sonny is preceded in death by his Father, Johnnie Wells and his Mother, Ruth Carter Wells. He is survived by his wife Earlene Wells, and his sister Mickey and her husband Randy Brown and their daughter, Talli Jo and her husband Mitchell and great niece Kooper Lyne Hardcastle, his children, John Wells, Laurie Wells, Brian Wells and his wife Rosangel, Glenn Farago and his wife Christine and Eric Farago and his wife Megan. His loving grandchildren who called him Poppy, Megan Lane, Katie Bokorney, Tyler Wells, Kelly Dolan, Brandon Wells, Zachary Kubsch, Luhana Wells, Austin Wells, and Eric Farago. And his great grandchildren, Denley Mitchell, Faleyn Mitchell, Joseph Bokorney, Emily Bokorney and Oaklee Wells.

In his final days, Sonny received compassionate care at the Silver Pines Nursing Home in Bastrop, Texas, where he praised the staff for their wonderful care.

In accordance with his wishes, Sonny requested no services and will be cremated. His legacy of love, hard work, and patriotism will continue to inspire those who knew him and he will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, love for his family, and friends and his unwavering pride in his Texas heritage and his country.
