First responders recovered the body of a 22-year-old Nixon man who went missing Sunday evening in the Guadalupe River near the Gonzales city dam.

The body of Daniel Cruz was recovered by Texas Parks & Wildlife game wardens at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 2. Gonzales Police Chief Tim Crow said the body was found in approximately the same location of the river where Cruz was last seen Sunday, May 1.

Cruz was reported missing at about 7:25 p.m. Sunday below the dam off Water Street, north of Independence Park. Eyewitnesses were able to tell responders the last place they had seen the victim in the river before he disappeared from view.

Game wardens were called in to conduct a search, but due to encroaching darkness, the search was placed on hold at dusk (about 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and resumed at 7 a.m. Monday, May 2. Gonzales police flew their drone to try to spot Cruz from the air, while the Gonzales Fire Department helped game wardens in their search of the river.
