The librarian for the Stella Ellis Hart Library in Smiley, Sheri Matz, has submitted her letter of resignation, Mayor Lisa Benavidez announced Tuesday, Nov. 14, on Facebook.
The library, located at 103 FM 108 North, Smiley, was closed Wednesday, Nov. 15 and it is unclear when it will reopen. It is normally open every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The organization had recently been the subject of an agenda item on the Smiley City Council meeting regarding “discussion/possible action on Stella Hart Library being financially responsible for their electric, water, trash, sewer, insurance and phone bills.”
The city had been paying all utility bills in the past for the library as it had been considered to be under the umbrella of the city. It is overseen by a library board of nine Smiley residents. According to the website, current board members are Katie Garrett, Suzy Parker, Pat Stillwell, Carol Nuinez, Linda Warzecha, Kathy Whitehead, Sheila Apisa, Rebecca Mejia and Mary White.
Stella Ellis Hart Library a collection of items to meet the informational and recreational reading needs of the citizens of Smiley. The collection includes: adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction books, a references section, Texana history, newspapers, magazines, books on tape, videos, audio-visual equipment and genealogy collection. The library also has a study area available for public use.
Other services provided are wireless internet access for the public. The library has a total of four computers for public use. The library also has monthly events for children.
