Unemployment rate increases to 3.7 percent in Gonzales County

Unemployment in Gonzales County increased to 3.7 percent in January 2024, beginning the year with the county placing the third-highest of all seven counties which comprise the Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area.

This increase ended a trend of unemployment rates dropping for the county for a previous four months in a row, according to state Labor Market Information (LMI) figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

For the entire Golden Crescent Workforce Development Area, the unemployment rate for January 2024 was 3.8 percent, lower than the state average of 4.1 percent. This represented a total of 3,489 residents in Gonzales, Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties seeking employment out of a total workforce of 91,051 people.

The counties reporting in lower than Gonzales County are LavacaCounty, with the lowest unemployment rate at 3.2 percent, followed by Calhoun County at 3.4 percent, with Jackson and Dewitt Counties at 3.5 percent. Gonzales follows with 3.7 percent, with Goliad at 3.9 percent, Victoria closes in the highest position at 4.3 percent.

For January 2024, there were 345 individuals in Gonzales County seeking employment out of a workforce of 9,360 with 9,015 reported as employed. In December 2023, there were 280 people seeking work in Gonzales County out of an employment force of 9,430 for a total unemployment rate of 3.0 percent.

In January 2023, Gonzales County had an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent. The 3.2 percent unadjusted unemployment rate for April 2023 was the lowest seen in Gonzales County since it was reported at 2.7 percent in March 2022.
