Apaches closes out preseason with scrimmage against Goliad Tigers

The Gonzales Apaches played their last football scrimmage on the road against the ninth-ranked Class 3A-1 Goliad Tigers Thursday, Aug. 22.

Apaches head football coach Joey Rivera was very impressed with the test his team had to face against one of the top teams in the state.

“We're tested for sure. You know, Goliad has a very good football team, well coached, very disciplined team, very physical. That will get us ready for what we're about to see for the next 10 weeks, for sure,” Rivera said.

River compared the Goliad scrimmage to the one against Beeville Jones, and he said during this scrimmage, not everything went their way.

“We saw kind of both ends of the spectrum for us. So we've got to figure out what I told the guys, we got to figure out that happy medium of not getting too high, not getting too low,” Rivera said.

One of the positives that Rivera saw is that he got see a lot of players rotating in and out. His team will be coming in healthy to start off the season.

“First, we’ve got a lot of young kids that have a lot of experience to gain, and that's what we were able to get there in that scrimmage,” Rivera said.

The Apaches kick off the season against the San Antonio Central Catholic Buttons and Rivera is looking forward to the matchup.

“It's gonna be a big, physical team. Their new football coach Glenn Mangold, coming over from New Braunfels, has a great history of having good football teams,” Rivera said.

The Apaches will play SACCHS Friday, Aug. 30 at Bob Benson ’66 Stadium, 1403 N St. Mary's St., San Antonio. Gates open at 6 p.m. and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
