Barbara Callender was born on December 15, 1932, to Jesse and Vera (Hobbs) Wiley in Wilson County, Texas. She passed from this life on April 11, 2026, at the age of 93, in Gonzales, Tx.
Barbara was married to Eddie B. Callender on July 3, 1952. They both grew up near Stockdale, and graduated from Stockdale High School, him in 1949 and her in 1950. While in Stockdale High School, Barbara took Home Economics classes, learning how to cook, sew, and run a household. Once married and living in San Antonio, Barbara took a job at Ft. Sam Houston National Bank.
She and Eddie began having children in 1953. Between May 1953 and January 1957, Barbara gave birth to three children. She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Johnson and Wanda Hearn, and a son, Eddie Jr., (Judy). In addition, Barbara is survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Carter, sister-in-law Helen Callender, and brother-in-law Preston Callender, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ.
While the kids were growing up, Barbara became known for her cooking and sewing skills. She prepared many meals for many people – both family and otherwise. She was especially well known for the cakes she made. Numerous people came into the Callender home to be fitted for custom made dresses – even entire wedding parties. Later, Barbara sold Sarah Coventry jewelry and Avon. As her children grew up and left home, Barbara joined Eddie and they sold real estate together. She managed the office and sold homes for some 35 years or more. In time, grandchildren came along and each one spent some quality time in the real estate office, as did some of the great grandchildren. There was always a cake or something she had baked for the adults (to go with coffee) and usually ice cream for the kids.
