Gilbert lived a life defined by service, strength, and compassion. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic, dedicating himself to caring for others. That same spirit of service carried throughout his life in everything he did.

He was a proud graduate of Gonzales High School, Class of 1962, where he excelled in cross country and competed at the district level, carrying a competitive spirit and determination that stayed with him throughout his life. He went on to graduate from Nixon-Clay Business College in Austin in 1964, building a strong foundation for a career marked by hard work and dedication. Before entering the Army, he was employed by the Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation, where he began a lifelong path of helping others.

To many, he was not just a professional, but someone they trusted and depended on. He also operated the Union Bus Station, where he became a familiar and welcoming presence to so many. His ability to connect with people and make them feel at ease was one of his greatest gifts.
