OBITUARY

Jene Allan Dreyer, Sr.

Posted

Jene Allan Dreyer, Sr. was born on May 4, 1929 in Dreyer, Texas to Clare (Malloch) and Edward Henry Dreyer.  He shed his earthly body on April 1, 2025 and went to his heavenly home to be with his bride and his Jesus.

He grew up on the family farm in Dreyer, Texas.  Starting as a young man, he worked with his father and his three brothers raising cattle and farming the land.  On March 12, 1954 he married the love of his life, Barbara Bowers.   They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 2021.   They were the proud parents of two daughters and one son.  Soon after they married, he left to serve his country in the U.S. Army.   He returned home after his service to live at the family farm until he moved his family to Gonzales.  He went to work for GVEC where he worked as a lineman for 37 years.  At his retirement, General Manager Doyle Hines spoke very highly of his years of service – he also said this was the first retirement celebration where the mother of the retiree was present.   She lived to be 104 years of age.

During his years at GVEC, he also raised chickens and continued to raise cattle at the family farm.  The farm was his favorite place to be, and he instilled his love of that land to his son who continues that tradition.  After his retirement, he worked as a courier for Prosperity Bank and at the Gonzales Livestock Barn on Fridays and Saturdays.   He loved working alongside his buddies at the auction and cherished those friendships until the end.

The most important thing in his life was serving his Jesus.   He served as a Deacon at Eastside Baptist Church for 65 years and worked faithfully and joyfully for his church until the day he died maintaining it for future generations.  During the last few years, after his health prevented him from doing some physical work, he continued to serve his church by ministering to everyone he met, visiting the sick and elderly, and helping in whatever way he could.  He was part of the youth Bible Study group on Tuesday nights and had a big impact on the lives of these young Christian men and women who he loved dearly.  He and Barbara were very involved in the Samaritan’s Purse ministry sending gifts to children each year at Christmas to help spread the love of Jesus throughout the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved bride, Barbara Ann (Bowers) Dreyer, his brothers Donald, Roger and Ned Dreyer and one sister, Alice Dreyer. He is survived by his two daughters, Debbie Soefje (Jesse), Joni Leland (Bill). And his son Jene Dreyer, Jr. (Sylvia); grandchildren Bonnie Wirth (Steve), Jaime Goerlitz (Dennis), Sara Wagner (Patrick), Colton Dreyer (Brianna)Tress Dreyer (Mariel) and Lyman Leland; great grandchildren, Grace Newman, Matthew Newman, Caleb Wagner, and Lainey Rae Dreyer.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends.  He had a special place in his heart for James Pullin, Jonathan Pullin, Lisa Brady, Hannah Pullin and Kristina Vega who he loved as his grandchildren.
