The Gonzales Lady Apaches extended their win streak to two with a 16-1 win over the San Antonio Memorial Minutewomen in four innings on Friday, April 5.
The Lady Apaches completed the season sweep of San Antonio Memorial and secured their second sweep of a district opponent this season.
Gonzales started off the game with a bang with a home run by sophomore Gyzelle Guevara to get the Lady Apaches’ offense rolling; she hit two home runs and went 2-for-3 at bat.
“I was really surprised that I even hit two home runs because the game before that I went 0 for 3 [at bat] And then my last at bat I hit a home run too. So I was really surprised. I didn't think I was going to hit two more,” Guevara said.
After back-to-back season sweeps of La Vernia and Memorial for Gonzales, Lady Apaches head softball coach Michelle Uribe said it felt awesome getting those big district wins.
“The feeling this year is so great. These kids really want to be successful and win. That's what we're doing,” Uribe said.
The Lady Apaches recorded 13 hits and earned 10 RBIs in the win over the Minutewomen and Uribe was happy for Guevara getting the offense going for her team.
“It feels amazing. Gyzelle hitting the ball really gets us going, so we know that when she's hitting, everybody can hit and that always is the fire that gets us started,” Uribe said.
The Lady Apaches hosted the Navarro Lady Panthers in Tuesday, April 9 and early in the season Gonzales fell to them, 4-3, on the road in a walk-off. This is a game Uribe and her players have circled.
“We're hungry for that win. We want to beat them. We know we're better and we want to beat them at our place,” Uribe said.
The Lady Apaches will go on the road Friday, April 12 for their final meeting with the Cuero Lady Gobblers and a chance at revenge for an earlier loss.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
