Lady Mustangs place 10th in state powerlifting meet

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs compete in the THSWPA State Championships in Frisco, Texas, on Thursday, March 14, and finished 10th overall out of 40 teams, surpassing expectations.

Grace Gomez, Kaylie Morin, Zulema Rodriguez, and Ashly Garcia made history and became the first girls from Nixon-Smiley High School to compete at the THSWPA State Championships. While both Kaylie Morin and Gracie Gomez placed sixth in their respective classes, Zulema Rodriguez and Ashly Garcia both made history by being the first two Nixon-Smiley girls to ever receive a medal at the THSWPA state meet!

Zulema Rodriguez placed fourth in her class, while Ashly Garcia Lady Mustangs at State Power placed third in hers.

“With the girls powerlifting season coming to an end, what can I say that I haven’t said before about these amazing young ladies I had to honor and privilege of coaching!” said Coach Eliseo Cano. “Every single girl in powerlifting did an amazing job representing Nixon-Smiley High School and the community!

“These young ladies helped put the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs Girls Powerlifting Team on the map. Thank you to all the girls and parents for allowing me to coach them! They will be a force to reckon with in the THSWPA for years to come!”

Team members include Grace Gomez, Olivia Jackson, Kaylie Morin, Mariela Castillo-Limon, Gabriela Castillo-Limon, Kendra Savoie, Zulema Rodriguez, Katelyn Fernandez, Janice White, Ashly Garcia, Jaylee Bustos, Frida Casas, Anahi Hernandez and Gabriella Villalobos.

Managers for the team were Madisen Yanes and Juliana Kendrick, while Cano also expressed gratitude to Tyler Barrientez, Oscar Acosta, and Jesus Espino for helping out as well.
