Mabel Marrou Gray, a beloved matriarch and pillar of strength for her family, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, at the age of 96. Born at home in Gillett, Texas, on May 3, 1928, to Jullien and Emma Spieckermann Marrou, Mabel's life was a beautiful testament of love, family, faith, and dedication.
After graduating from Gonzales High School, Mabel married, Lawrence Anderson “Buck” Gray, on July 16, 1949. Together, they raised four wonderful children: James Lawrence “Larry”, Susan, Clint, and Laverne. Once her youngest child, Laverne, started school, Mabel joined her father and husband at the family business, Marrou & Co., in 1964. What began as helping out quickly blossomed into a lifelong career, and Mabel became not only a valued partner but eventually the owner of the family business. Founded in 1939, Marrou's was well-known for selling International and Buick product lines, standing as a symbol of trust and reliability in the community for 80 years. Mabel's steadfast work ethic and genuine desire to do right by her customers were evident as she worked alongside her son Larry every day until the remarkable age of 91.
Beyond her work, she and Buck enjoyed traveling together, attending business conventions, and exploring Las Vegas and Alaska. But her greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Mamaw." To them, Mamaw was more than a grandmother. She taught them everything from filing paperwork and managing inventory at Marrou's, to picking and shelling pecans, playing a mean game of dominoes, and plucking oranges from the tree in her front yard. And of course, there was always a glass bottle of Coke waiting in the fridge as a special treat.
Mamaw’s fried chicken was highly coveted, and so was the way she made each grandchild know they were her "favorite." Her love was vast, her wisdom was timeless, and her presence was a steady anchor for all who knew her.
Mabel is survived by her loving and devoted children: Larry and wife Patrie Gray, Susan and husband B.F. Williams, Clint and wife Rena Gray, and Laverne and husband Kenneth Brzozowski. Her legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren: Michelle Airheart, Kenna Lucas, Lindsey Gillum, Jessica Gray, Matthew Gray, and Jayna Dahl; great-grandchildren: Coleman “CJ” Airheart, Bailey Travis, Trevor Durrett, Katie Durrett, Hannah Durrett, Vance Lucas, Lana Lucas, Kenley Wyant, Clay Wyant, Arie Dahl, and Leo Dahl; and great-great-granddaughter Arden Gray Airheart. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She is reunited in heaven with her parents, her husband Buck, her sisters Emily Gray, Ella Menard, Mary Jean Neuse, and Ruby Mae Marrou, her brothers Julian Marrou and Tommy Marrou, and her grandchildren James Luke Morgan and Lea Ann Brzozowski Wyant.
Honoring Mabel as pallbearers are Matthew Gray, CJ Airheart, Trevor Durrett, Vance Lucas, Wade Airheart, Stephen Lucas, Kendall Gillum, and Ryan Dahl. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Matt Wyant, Clay Wyant, Cole Travis, Leo Dahl, and the dedicated staff and residents of the Romberg House.
A celebration of Mabel's life will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Gonzales, officiated by Reverend Ray Hagan. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by interment at the Masonic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Gonzales, Texas, honoring Mabel's lifelong faith and dedication to her community.
Though Mabel has left this world, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, family, and hard work, a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
