Mary Lou Matejcek, age 82, of Gonzales, TX, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Mary was born on March 13, 1943 in Gonzales. She was the daughter of Jimmy and Lenora (Hrnicko) Selzer. Growing up, she helped out in the family store, Little New York. She attended Gonzales High School and was a member of the graduating class of 1961. She met the love of her life, Joe Matejcek, on June 13, 1959. They were married in Moulton, Texas on November 19, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church and were blessed to celebrate 61 years of marriage. Mary and Joe lived in Houston, Texas where they began their family. Mary enjoyed being a mother and homemaker when her children were young. She was always greatly involved in their activities. They moved back to Gonzales in 1975 where she and Joe began raising chickens for Holly Farms. Later, Mary enjoyed working with her daughter at The China Basket in Gonzales for many years. She enjoyed visiting with people and helping them shop.
Mary found delight in the simple things—whether enjoying anything chocolate, surrounding herself with the color purple, or opening her home to her grandchildren, where countless memories were made. Mary loved cooking for her family, filling her kitchen with the aroma of homecooked meals and her home with laughter and togetherness. Mary was known for planning holiday gatherings for the family and always had something new for everyone to try- she spent countless hours sifting through cookbooks. Everyone always looked forward to her outstanding desserts.
She and Joe shared many adventures over the years, including one of their favorite pastimes of visiting casinos together. Their bond was one of love, laughter, and companionship that served as an example to everyone blessed to know them. As proper and ladylike as Mary was, she never veered far from her small town country roots. She spent many days walking the chicken houses while Joe built cabinets and she enjoyed nothing more than fresh fried catfish or frog legs from the creek.
Mary was a kind, soft-spoken woman full of grace. She loved her family more than anything and was always there to show support for her children and grandchildren. No one was more excited than Mary when her great grandchildren arrived. Mary made sure she had a freshly baked treat for their visits.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her family. Mary held a special bond with each of them. She was the heart of her family. She created countless memories through family gatherings and traditions. Her legacy of love and faith will continue to live on through the generations she so deeply treasured and nurtured.
She is survived by her loving family, daughter Tammy Hillman (Wayne) of Gonzales, son Joseph Matejcek (Geralyn) of Rockport, grandchildren Elizabeth Mikesh (Blake), Maggie Matejcek, Matthew Hillman (Kaily), Mason Matejcek (Cierra Borak), great grandchildren Emelia Mary Mikesh, Matthew Jake Hillman, and Hallie Shay Hillman, sister June Murphy (Matt) of Denton, sister-in-laws Susie Selzer of Gonzales, Julia Spitzenberger of Lexington, and brother-in-laws Dale Matejcek (Terry) and Billy Matejcek (Emma) of Giddings.
