Mustangs face Kenedy in final scrimmage

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs ended their last football scrimmage on the road against the Kenedy Lions Thursday, Aug. 22.

Mustangs head football coach Paul Kirby was really pleased how his team did against Kenedy with very little film and retaining information, he said.

“I was very pleased with how our players were able to retain the information we taught them all week and to adapt and overcome some adversities throughout the game, especially during that 12-minute live quarter. They really showed some excitement and some enthusiasm, which led to their execution. So it was an overall, very, very good showing for our program,” Kirby said.

One of the things Kirby has noticed from his players is the enthusiasm being instilled into them at the start of the season.

“They're an exciting young group, they're fast, they're physical, and when they really put their enthusiasm into that, they're very difficult to stop. We're so young, we're still have a lot of learning to do. But the retention level of these guys are very smart football players. It's very hard to find,” Kirby said.

The Mustangs will be heading out on the road for the season opener against the Luling Eagles and this will be first head coaching game for Kirby.

“I'm very excited. I'm very, very excited for these boys that put a lot of work in the past few weeks. They're preparing very well. This week so far, we taught a lot yesterday, as a new head football coach, I couldn't be happier,” Kirby said.

Kirby and the Mustangs are expected to face a fast and exciting Luling team in the season opener.

“We've been preparing for everything, every possible thing we could get out of their type of offense. We've been showing it on our scout team, so we're expecting a great game from them. They're like I said, they're very athletic, especially Tate Lopez, he's a dude. But I also expect our dudes to show up. They're going to show out. So that's what I'm expecting,” Kirby said.

The Mustangs open up the season in Luling Friday, Aug. 30.

Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
