Yoakum sweeps Lady Mustangs

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs returned home for a non-district match against the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Lady Mustangs started the game rough, losing the first set 25-5, but quickly got back together and made the last two sets closer.

“I thought Yoakum came out ready to battle. I really thought they played a really good short game. They kind of picked us apart on the tips, something that we just weren't prepared for coming in for that and now, something that I know we need to work on as a team,” Nixon-Smiley head volleyball coach Loraine Yates said.

The Lady Apaches put up double digits in sets two and three, and Yates was getting her players to see what the coaches are seeing on the sideline, she said.

“Just getting the girls to kind of see what we're seeing on the sidelines, without me having to get a timeout call, and trying to get them to recognize when the attacker’s going up. How to adjust to the short game, and how to read what the attackers doing while they're kind of still in motion,” Yates said.

The Lady Mustangs will take on the Three Rivers Lady Bulldogs Friday, Sept. 6, and Yates and team will be preparing for that match.

“We're gonna focus on some things that I think we need to work on. Not really focus up so much on what Three Rivers has to bring to the table this week. Do we need to work on some defensive sets we need to work on serve-receive, see, things like that that we're going to use to kind of prepare,” Yates said.

The Three Rivers games start at 4:30 p.m.
