The Nixon-Smiley High School boys powerlifting team will send seven lifters to state after winning the THSPA Region 4 Division 3 regional championship.
“I am blessed beyond anything I can think of, being able to coach some amazing kids at Nixon-Smiley High School!” said Coach Eliseo Cano. “My girls team made history last week and this week my boys team made history by winning the THSPA Region 4 Division 3 Regional Championship! (We’re) taking seven boys to state!”
The Nixon-Smiley boys powerlifting team won first place with 36 points overall.
• Cesar Vazquez, 114 weight class - second place state qualifier
• Andrew Meza, 123 weight class - third place
• Tyler Barrientez, 132 weight class - first place state qualifier
• Oscar Acosta, 148 weight class - first place state qualifier, best bench award, best dead lift award, best overall lifter, deadlift regional record holder of 510 pounds and tied the regional bench record of 365 pounds.
• Jose Olvera, 148 weight class - fifth place state qualifier on state totals of 1,200 pounds.
• Omar Morales Navarro, 181 weight class - third place state qualifier on state totals of 1,405 pounds.
• Jesus Espino, 198 weight class - second place state qualifier
• Gavino Moreno, 220 weight class - fourth place state qualifier on state totals of 1,480 pounds.
• Noah Jenks, 308 weight class -third place
“Now to state so we can make some history,” Cano said.
