Gonzales ISD is proud to announce that the high school competition gym will be named in honor of Victor Salazar, a distinguished educator, coach, and former superintendent who dedicated 36 years of his life to the district. Salazar’s impact on the community, students, and athletics makes this recognition deeply meaningful.

Salazar began his journey in Gonzales ISD as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. Under his leadership, the basketball program achieved historic success, becoming the first-ever district champions in the history of Gonzales. The stands were always packed, and the team consistently won more than 20 games each year, a testament to Salazar’s coaching skills and the dedication of his players.

Beyond his coaching achievements, Salazar also served as superintendent of Gonzales ISD, where his leadership continued to shape the district in profound ways. His commitment to the students, staff, and community was evident in every role he undertook, always prioritizing their well-being and growth.

Salazar also introduced the "Vic Salazar Basketball Camp," the first of its kind in Gonzales ISD, providing young athletes with the opportunity to develop their skills and passion for the game. He enjoyed working closely with the students and staff, fostering a supportive and energetic environment.

Reflecting on the honor of having a portion of the gym named after him, Salazar expressed his deep gratitude.

"I never would have dreamed I would have a gym named after me," he said. "I just wanted to be able to coach basketball."

For Salazar, the true honor belongs to the students he coached — the young athletes who put in the hard work, day in and day out.

"The work that you put in is what you’re going to get out," he emphasized, sharing a message that continues to inspire.

Salazar is proud to be a part of the rich history of Gonzales ISD, cherishing the countless memories of practices filled with the sound of basketballs bouncing and whistles blowing. His dedication to safety and the care of his students was always a priority, and he admired the hard work and commitment they brought to the game of basketball.

As Gonzales ISD prepares to name the competition gym after Victor Salazar, the entire community celebrates a man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and athletes. This gym will stand as a lasting tribute to a coach, leader, and superintendent who gave so much of himself to Gonzales ISD, leaving a mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
