The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs picked up a huge district victory Tuesday night, defeating Karnes City to secure their first district win of the season. The Lady Mustangs played with great energy and effort on both ends of the floor, and their teamwork down the stretch helped seal an important win as the district race continues.
Nixon-Smiley was led offensively by Ruby Mendez and Grace Gomez, who each scored 8 points. Sky’Lee Pape added 6 points, while Dulce Mosqueda and Gabriela Limon chipped in 5 points apiece to help keep the scoring balanced. The Lady Mustangs continued to battle throughout the night and found ways to make plays when it mattered most.
Head Coach Trevor Johnson was proud of how his team responded in a must-win situation.
“I am incredibly proud of the win our girls achieved tonight! The girls came through when we needed them most. I told them before the game that it was the most important game of the season and that I needed a team effort to get the job done, and they did just that. It has not been the start to district that we wanted, but we are excited to get back to work and ride this momentum into round 2 of district play.”
With the win, Nixon-Smiley gains momentum heading into the second round of district play as the Lady Mustangs look to keep building confidence and continue improving each week.
